As a recent graduate (currently employed, but who
knows about the future), I concur. I was under
the impression that targetted mailing, with a
cover letter tailored to the individual
institution is far more professional. This seems
a little too desperate ("will curate for food?").

I don't object to job postings on the list, and I
wouldn't object to advertisements of a relevant,
professional nature if there was some sort of key
in the header: "ADV: Travelling Exhibit
          Available," for example.
