I can't help myself ... I have no expertise in this area whatsoever, but
it's too tempting. Is there enough residue of anything inside the tank to
swab and analyze? It looks vaguely like some sort of pressure vessel, so it
could be missing the pump & spray mechanism for a mister of some kind -
insecticide?

Definitely not a smudge pot unless they used something very different than
those used here in the Sacramento Valley orchards. They were much large,
and upright....more like portable camping heater. They held oil, and the
one shown doesn't have a container large enough to make enough heat to keep
the frost away.

The size and shape is the same as a hanging butter churn in our collection,
although our butter churn has a wider opening at the top and a wire handle
from which to hang the churn.
