You should definitely check out Lenore Carrington (Carington).  She was a
surrealist artist and writer, I believe she was English, but moved to Berlin
before WWII and set up house with a very noteworthy surrealist writer whose name
escapes me.  However, her short stories are wonderful, and after she and her
partner escaped the Nazi's, they moved to South America where her artwork was
widely shown.  Definitly read her books.  However, I have seen little of her
art.  I hope to someday come across a biography.
