The Swedish National Heritage Board is seeking a
Conservation Scientist
Head of Material Analysis Unit
Department for Conservation.

The National Heritage Board has adopted a new organizational structure from January
1, 2008. The appointment of the position; head of Material Analysis, will accordingly take
place during the spring of 2009. The head of the new unit will play a central role in the
shaping of the unit for material analysis within the Department for conservation. The department
is housed in newly built facilities located in Visby on Gotland, featuring well
equipped state of the art laboratories for conservation and material analysis.
The Department for Conservation is the information center for the administration and
preservation of cultural heritage, developing and coordinating information resources for the
cultural heritage sector within the areas of artifacts, buildings and landscapes. The endeavors
of the department encompass preventive and practical efforts, including a supportive
and cooperative role with museums, the archaeological sector, educational institutions
and other groups.

The Material Analysis unit is responsible for the field of conservation science
which entails the investigation of mechanisms for the preservation of cultural heritage
through advanced scientific methods. This work demands historical and technical knowledge,
as well as expertise in material and natural science. It includes the building and development
of information networks, reference collections and databases. A central role is
to communicate knowledge between the arts and sciences by translating and adapting
research results to the practical applications and needs of cultural heritage.

Main Activities and Responsibilities
As head of the unit your role will be to coordinate, in accordance with established goals
and guidelines, operations marked by a high level of planning, leadership, collaboration
and evaluation of unit activities. You will be responsible for administrating and managing
staff (6 - 8 positions) and budgeting for the unit. The position will be carried out in close
cooperation with the other unit heads, and with the department head. You will also be able
to both participate and lead research projects in cooperation with other institutions and
universities.

Qualifications
The applicant shall have a background in natural science and hold a PhD in a relevant
field, or possess corresponding qualifications. A deep interest, as well as documented
skills, in questions relating to cultural heritage, history and preservation research is essential.
As is the ability to combine and utilize the skills represented by the different professions
within the department. Past training and experience leading research projects is also
a merit. The successful candidate should have experience with budget control and staff
management, be of responsible character with excellent social skills, and have the ability
to write and communicate well in both English and Scandinavian language. An applicant
lacking Swedish or another Scandinavian language must show a commitment to learn
Swedish within a reasonable time period.
