Hi Heidi

The answer(s) to your question is "it depends"
In mounting a major Natural History exhibit I used (eg.) an image of a
painting held by the Boston MFA. They supply a transparency at essentially
the cost of overhead BUT must approve of use beforehand and must approve
image QUALITY once you process. They would NEVER allow alteration of an
image. Just email them for a standard contract.

There is sometimes (often?) real abuse of images by science and natural
history musuems of photos. In most cases the musuem does NOT hold the
copyright(s) to the pics, the photographer does.

This is also the case of privately owned paintings. I own some magnificent
watercolors but could not make postcards of them without the artist's
permission or his/her estates.

Cheers
Lois
