APRIL IS ALASKA ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH

April is Archaeology Month!   Sponsored by the National Park Service, a
series of public events will be held throughout Alaska to provide
information about archaeology and how to save Alaska’s past.

April is also the time for Kodiak’s Whale Fest.  This annual celebration
of the gray whales passage near Kodiak Island on their 10,000 mile
annual spring migration from the shores of Baja to the Bering and
Chukchi sea, takes place April 16-24th.  For more information about
Kodiak’s Whale Fest, contact Susan Payne at 481-1719.

In recognition of both Archaeology Month and Whale Fest, the following
events are planned at Alutiiq Museum located at 215 Mission Road.  For
more information about any of the events listed call 486-7004.

Friday, April 9th.  LECTURE 7:00pm
Dr. Gary Carver, Geologist  “Sea Levels and the Archaeological Record -
One Immigration or Many?”

Friday, April 16th.  LECTURE 7:00pm
The Alutiiq Museum Staff: Amy Steffian, Libby Pontti, and Patrick
Saltonstall  “Community Archaeology:  Results from Zaimka”

Thursday, April 22nd.  LECTURE 7:00pm
Dr. Lydia Black, author of “Glory Remembered.”  In celebration of Whale
Fest: “Alutiiq Whaling Traditions”

Saturday, April 24.  Children’s Activities 10-Noon
The Alutiiq Museum hosts the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge’s Families
Understanding Nature (FUN) program and Whale Fest as they present
activities to children and their parents on Alutiiq culture, archaeology
and whales.

Friday, April 30th.  LECTURE 7:00pm
Ron Senungetuk, Artist and Professor of art emeritus of the University
of Alaska Fairbanks, “What is Alaska Native Art?”
