This 10-session course introduces participants to the principles and
practices of managing museums in the 21st. Century. Sessions include an
overview of the various types of museums; mission, governance and ethics;
planning and programming; fiscal management; exhibition development and
collections management; fundraising and marketing strategies; and the
realities of the museum workplace environment.

Emphasis will be placed on the relationship of museums to their communities
and audiences; the professional context of museum work; and emerging
developments in leadership and management theory that can help organizations
and staff reach their fullest potential. At the conclusion of the course,
participants will have a better understanding of museum operations and the
challenges and opportunities that exist within the industry.

The class is organized around lectures, presentations by guest speakers, and
visits to museums in the tri-state area. Assignments include specific
readings for in-class discussions, two short assignments, and a written and
oral presentation on specific aspects covered in the course.

Participants will be expected to keep current on issues related to museums
in the press and other media, and participate actively in class discussions.
