The Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC will hold a major symposium entitled
"Art and Empire:  The Aztec of Central Mexico" on November 13-14, 1998.
This symposium is organized in conjunction with a long-term loan of Aztec
and West Mexican art from The Field Museum in Chicago and has been made
possible by a Museum Loan Network implementation grant.  The keynote address
on Friday evening will be given by Michael E. Smith, Professor of
Anthropology, State University of New York, Albany.  Other speakers include
Elizabeth Hill Boone, Tulane University; Jill Leslie McKeever Furst, Moore
College of Art and Design; Emily Umberger, Arizona State University; and E.
Michael Whittington, Curator of pre-Columbian and African Art, Mint Museum
of Art.

The Friday keynote if free and open to the public. Registration for Saturday
