MT. ZION ALBANY CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT MUSEUM
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Executive Director.  Mt. Zion Albany Civil Rights Movement Museum seeks
experienced museum professional to lead daily operations of new
institution scheduled to open in November 1998. The museum interprets
the Albany/Southwest Georgia civil rights movement with an emphasis on
oral history and freedom music.  To be housed in the 1906 old Mt. Zion
Baptist Church building which was the location of many mass meetings and
is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Current
restoration project also includes construction of an outbuilding for
restrooms and general storage.  Expected completion date - August 1998.
November grand opening will coincide with 37th anniversary of the
founding of the Albany Movement which began as a grassroots effort and
attracted national attention from the 1961-62 involvement of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr.

Highly motivated individual needed to work as part of small team with
curator and board of directors. The board is composed of a diverse group
of individuals from the community, several of whom are Albany Movement
veterans.  Director coordinates all aspects of museum management
including grant writing, fund raising, community relations, volunteers,
and sound fiscal management.  Master’s degree in museum studies or
related field, two or more years of administrative experience, and
knowledge of African American history preferred.

Albany is southwest Georgia’s regional center for industry, business,
retail sales, cultural activities, health care and media.  The “Good
Life” city is Georgia’s 6th largest with the state’s lowest cost of
living for an urban area.  Twelve major industries are based in Albany
including Procter & Gamble, Miller Brewing, Bob’s Candies, and M&M Mars.
Albany has an active arts and cultural community including a symphony
orchestra, live theater group, ballet company, an AAM accredited art
museum and an American Zoo and Aquarium Association accredited wild
animal park.
