The British Library's "adopt-a-book" programme (see www.bl.uk) seems to have been very sucessful. They set the programme up so that you could adopt a specific book (if you made a large enough donation) or you could give money to the general fund.

They gave free tours of the conservation workshop to the donors (although you didn't necessarily see "your" book). If you paid for the entire conservation work on a particular book you also got your name on a bookplate (in the museum environment I suppose a credit on the exhibit label along side the donor would be similar).

I must admit I'm not sure what your "obvious reasons" are for being uncomfortable.

Hello

Has anyone had any experience with soliciting funding sources for specific
object conservation at smaller institutions? I am serving on a committee
that has suggested creating a 'wish-list' for objects that need to be
conserved and soliciting people to 'adopt' that object for conservation
work.

This makes me feel uncomfortable (for obvious reasons). Has anyone done
something similar? I'd like to hear about it!
