I do agree it is a tragedy that some of the structures will be torn down.

However, if you look at the following link
http://www.montpelier.org/rest-dupont.htm   you will see that the
organization understood they would have to follow the wishes of Mrs. Scott
who handed over the property. If this link is in fact true, there is not
much that can be done as far as the removal of the DuPont additions.
Restoring the Mansion to the Madison period will fulfill Mrs. Scott's
wishes. Her will specified that it would be appropriate for Montpelier to be
owned by an organization that would restore Montpelier "in such a manner as
to conform as nearly as possible with the architectural pattern which
existed when said property was owned and occupied by President Madison."
