The Image Permanence Institute (IPI) has now completed the nine training

sessions required for the first phase of the Preservation Environment
Monitor (PEM) and Climate Notebook (CNB) software field trial. There are

184 institutions participating from 40 states. Roughly 17% are archives,

28% are libraries, and 55% are museums or historic houses. Response has
been good so far. We are now preparing to enter the second phase:
creating database records for a large number of materials considered to
be important by the field. The remainder of this project and future
spin-offs will require a permanent conservation or preservation
professional. Collection objects will range from natural history
specimens to paintings and microfilm so applicants from any area of
specialty are welcome.

PRESERVATION RESEARCH POSITION. The Image Permanence Institute (IPI), a
non-profit, university-based reservation research laboratory at
Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, is seeking a
conservator, preservation specialist, or conservation scientist to work
full time on issues related to storage environments in libraries,
archives, and museums. The successful candidate will have a major role
in developing new concepts and software to assist institutions in
managing collection storage and display environments. The position
requires knowledge of collections preservation, institutional practices,
and computers. Major responsibilities will be to help develop a database
of environmental parameters for a broad range of collection objects,
communicate with over 180 participant institutions in a field trial of
IPI’s hardware and software, and perform advanced research on
institutional preservation management. A variety of experiences is a
plus, and good people skills are necessary. The successful candidate
will join a team of applied preservation scientists, will have the
opportunity to travel, and will enjoy good benefits and a salary
commensurate with experience. Contact James Reilly, IPI Director, by
phone at (716) 475 2306, by FAX
at (716) 475-7230 or by e-mail: [log in to unmask] Inquiries held in
