Research Council UK Fellowships
Research Fellow in Education/Learning/Visitor Studies

Department of Museum Studies, University of Leicester

Salary - Grade 8: £34,448 to £38,772
Ref: R2988
The deadline for applications is 20 October

Research Councils UK is continuing its Academic Fellowship scheme to provide an attractive path to academia for researchers with potential for outstanding research careers. An Academic Fellowship is available in the area of Education and Learning and/or Visitor Studies in the Department of Museum Studies with a flexible start date from October 2006. The Fellowship is for 5 years with the guarantee of an open-ended academic position, subject to successful completion of standard academic probation within the five years of the fellowship.

The Academic Fellow will bring research skills in Education, Learning and/or Visitor Studies which will contribute to the Department’s expanding areas of interest in museums and heritage. While the Fellow may arrive with experience in the museum/heritage area, it is quite possible that he or she will acquire this knowledge after joining the Department, having developed his or her own expertise in other areas of education, learning or visitor-related research. The Department’s interests here are broad and evolving: it is active, for example, in the field of new media and could certainly accommodate research in this area.
The Academic Fellow will develop his or her own research programmes and will, over the course of the Fellowship, progressively step into an academic role similar to that of his or her colleagues. This will combine research with contributions to the Department’s diverse teaching programmes and developments. Amongst the developments currently in progress are MAs in Interpretive Studies, Digital Heritage, and Heritage Education and Visitor Studies. The Academic Fellow will also contribute to the sustainability of RCMG by setting research agenda, acting as an intellectual lead and advisor, and possibly through fuller collaboration. RCMG depends, for its intellectual drive, on academic staff in the Department, and currently supports the collaboration of several members of staff in the Department, with great benefits for those academics involved. Its current projects include the £0.5m Rethinking Disability Representation. The Centre has been particularly concerned with learning and the social role of museums, but it has also included studies of communities of practice and professional communication (an EU project) and the use of new media. Its particular concerns and outlook develop organically with academic staff in the Department and its focus and perspectives in, for example, studies of museum learning or visitors, are likely to be shaped by the Academic Fellow.

Full details about the scheme are available at: www.rcuk.ac.uk/acfellow/what.asp.
