Instead of staying in the city, stay in Hoboken, right across the river.
You can pick up the NY Waterway ferry at the front door of the hotel and
have a great, relaxing trip to and from the city each day; it takes about 20
minutes each way and I think a round trip ticket was about $10. Along with
your ferry ticket, you get a pass on the Waterway bus system that will take
you around town for free (it only went up to Central Park the last time we
were there, but that still got you into the museum districts). It goes to
late in the night; we used it when we went to the theater, so it should work
for New Years Eve. Have a great time - - -

P.S. Skip Atlantic City on your travel part of the trip, it's a pit since
the casinos moved in. It used to be a fun place to go when I was a kid.

Hi List,
I realize this question could have endless answers, but I had to ask the
experts! My husband & I will be spending a week in the City (for New
Years!), and then we have another week to travel around. Besides the
OBVIOUS choices (Met, MOMA, etc.), what "hidden treasures" of the city are
on your "don't miss" list?
I'd also love to know of other recommended stops within driving distance for
our subsequent week. Ok, go crazy!
