Check out a company called C&H Distributors
(www.chdist.com)or 800-558-9966. We use a cart called
the Eurocraft (under Mobile Shop Equipment). The cart
is a bright blue, solid looking cart with 4 drawers
and a small cabinet - all which lock. The cart walls
are metal and very durable. C&H offers a number of
different themes - including two drawers and two open
trays, two cabinets and no drawers, etc. At the moment
we store our entire teaching collection in two of
these carts which allows our volunteers to pull out a
multitude of different objects based on the visitor's
interest (e.g if the visitor is interested in the
technical aspects of airplanes, the airplane pieces
come out. If a visitor is interested in the social
progression of stewardesses to flight attendants, the
stewardesses uniforms can be pulled out - all objects
to address both of these topics are stored in the same
cart.)
We bought these carts, but there are museums that
build their own carts to better incorporate their
needs. Contact the National Building Museum and the
National Zoo for examples.
One thing to keep in mind is who will be using these
carts? The carts I described above are reasonably easy
to move around the museum(especially with the rubber
(not plastic) wheels)- important because most of our
volunteers are in their 70's.
