Visitor Services Coordinator position

 

The University of Kansas Natural History Museum seeks a Visitor Services
Coordinator (Program Assistant) to oversee guest services, the gift shop
and events in a dynamic state tourist destination. The Coordinator
manages a staff of student employees. The successful candidate will have
a bachelor's degree, professional experience in a retail or customer
service enterprise, supervisory experience, standard computer skills and

The KU Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center welcomes
100,000 visitors a year from across the United States and the world.
Families, school groups, tour organizations, prospective KU students,
undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and visiting scholars make
the museum a destination in northeast Kansas. The Visitor Services
Coordinator is responsible for all guest services including building
access and gallery monitoring, the gift shop, events, and he or she
oversees a staff of student employees. The Visitor Services Coordinator
reports to the Assistant Director for Administration.  

 

Required Qualifications

1) A bachelor's degree in museum studies, marketing, communications,
business or closely related field 

2) At least one year of professional experience in a retail or customer
service enterprise working with a wide range of constituencies in a
diverse community 
3) One year of supervisory experience including hiring and training of
staff 
4) One year of work experience that required regular use of office
software, databases and/or networks 
5) Excellent written and oral communications skills. Written
communication will be evaluated based on application materials. Oral
communication skills will be addressed through the interview and
reference checks.  

 

Preferred Qualifications

1) A master's degree in museum studies, marketing, communications,
business or closely related field 
2) Two or more years of supervisory experience 
3) Knowledge of standard museum policies and procedures 
4) Visitor services experience in a museum or non-profit, cultural
organization 
5) Experience with Macintosh software 
6) Fluency in second language 
7) Background or training in evolutionary biology, or general training
in science 
8) Solid working knowledge of campus, Lawrence and region.
