Hi all,

I'm new to this list, but an existing member suggested I post some questions I recently asked on an art history list to this one, and I'm taking her up on it!

I've already had some great suggestions about where to get generic lists of museum names, so I'm really interested in personal experiences at this point that answer the following questions:

1. Examples of museums that are less than 30,000 sq ft in area (total, not gallery space) but that are exemplary in terms of meeting their mission, community needs, etc.? We are also interested in opinions or citations about the value of small versus large museums.

2. We are making a list of all the "non-museum" names ("Center for Visual Arts," "University Art Gallery") that are applied to buildings housing a combination of permanent collection galleries and traveling exhibitions, preferably in the USA (international naming conventions are different). Evaluative assessments of this issue (as well as, or at this point even more than, examples) would be very welcome.

3. We're looking for examples of museums moving location and keeping their name (or at least the "museum" or "gallery" part of it; or only changing to reflect a major donor). We're also looking for examples of museums with more than one location.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me/us!

Louise Siddons.
