COMMUNITY CURATOR

The Historical Society of Washington seeks a full time Community Curator.
The Community Curator is responsible for developing changing exhibits and
programs interpreting the city’s diverse neighborhoods and communities.
These exhibits and programs draw on documentary research, oral history,
artifacts, and the contributions of community members and historians to
tell the stories of people and places in the city. The City Museum is a $24
million project with federal, municipal and private support.  It is
scheduled to open in the renovated Carnegie Library Building in downtown
Washington in May 2003.

SUMMARY OF WORK: The Community Curator is the project manager for all
phases of each community exhibit, from working with community members and
historians on developing exhibit scope and content to conducting research,
identifying artifacts, writing scripts and working with the exhibit
designer on design concept and installation.  The Community Curator works
collaboratively with other staff members on a variety of related museum-
wide efforts as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a resourceful and organized
individual with a background in exhibits and cultural programs and a
commitment to outreach and community participation.  Required skills and
competencies:  Knowledge of exhibit process, from concept development,
research and script writing to handling of artifacts, installation and
evaluation . Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience
working with community members and scholars and the ability to facilitate
their involvement in similar projects.  Strong project management skills.
Preferred:  Knowledge of Washington, D.C.’s neighborhoods and communities.
Background in cultural or social history.

Must be able to work some weekend days and occasional evenings.

FLOOR MANAGER

The Historical Society of Washington seeks a full time Floor Manager for
the City Museum.  The Floor Manager manages frontline staff and volunteers
working with visitors in galleries and other public spaces throughout the
museum to ensure that all visitors are welcomed to the museum and enjoy a
quality experience.  The City Museum is a $24 million project with federal,
municipal and private support.  It is scheduled to open in the renovated
Carnegie Library Building in downtown Washington in May 2003.

SUMMARY OF WORK: The Floor Manager recruits, selects, trains, and manages a
diverse paid and volunteer staff who work directly with the public: 1) part-
time paid greeters who welcome and orient visitors in the Great Hall and 2)
volunteer interpreters who staff exhibit galleries and assist with special
programs and events. This position is critical for providing a high quality
experience for visitors, smooth operations, and also ensuring security for
museum collections and exhibits.  The Floor Manager also handles intake and
screening of volunteer applications museum-wide.  The position reports to
the Vice President for Programs.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a well-organized individual with
excellent communication and management skills in order to effectively
train, support and supervise the volunteer interpreter and greeter corps.
Required skills and competencies:  Expertise working with the public in
museums or other cultural and/or educational contexts.  Expertise in
developing/conducting training programs and managing comparable staff and
volunteers.  Ability to relate to a diverse staff and public and work as
part of a team. Preferred:  Background in museum education and /or American
history.  Knowledge of learning styles and principles of customer service.

Must be able to work some weekend days and evenings.
