DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR STATE AND LOCAL HISTORY

Professional history association in Nashville, TN, seeks full-time director
of programs.  This position works directly under the direction of executive
director/CEO and has the following responsibilities:

Develop, implement and manage all aspects of AASLH professional development
program, including regional workshops on interpretation and historic house
management, online Internet workshops, the Seminar for Historical
Administration, annual meeting sessions, and other training programs.

Provide direction to, and work closely with the annual meeting coordinator
and associated comittees regarding the development of program sessions and
speakers.

Coordinate and assume responsibility for AASLH awards program.  Staff
liason to AASLH Awards Committee.

Coordinate and assume responsibility for content of quarterly magazine,
working with director of marketing on production.

Coordinate and assume responsibility for content of monthly newsletter,
working with director of marketing on production.

Coordinate and implement Native American Initiative, in conjunction with
appropriate committee and volunteers.

Coordinate and implement Historic House Initiative, in conjunction with
appropriate committee and volunteers.

Work with executive director and CEO in development and implemenation of
new programs and projects.

Prepare and administer budget in areas of responsibility.

Assist in grant writing as necessary.

Coordinate and supervise AASLH interns.

Assist in fair-share time with other employees for general office functions

SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS

Deep appreciation for the field of public history, and all aspects of state
and local history.

Ability to coordinate and work effectively with volunteers.

Ability to coordinate educational programs

Ability to effectively organize and coordinate numerous activities
simultaneously.

Ability to work both as a team member and independently.

Possess computer literacy and experience with the Internet

Willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary.

Willingness and ability to travel as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred, in field related to
the work of AASLH, such as history, public history, museum studies, history
education, etc.

Five years experience working in historical organizations, preferably in
education.  Experience developing and organizing educational programs,
seminars, workshops, annual meetings, curriculum programs a plus.
