Dear Jane,
'This Old house' (BPS) did a program from Sweden some time ago.
They visited a house with a three story retro fit elevator.
It used a screw mechanism insted of counter weights. The system was a
profesional off the shelf product that met all building codes.
Though not cheap it was less than 50k.
Here in the states I have seen hydraulic wheel chair lifts with
emergancy back up power supplies that provide one floor lift capacity.
I don't know who makes them, but a search of of lift manufactures
should turn them up.
I suppose the question is are they demaning an 'Elevator' or making the
aria handycaped accessable. For even a properly built ramp meets that
code requirement.

                        Yours
                          Tw
