Social Science Analyst. ISO, the unit responsible for  studying
Smithsonian visitors and exhibitions, has an immediate opening. The
office conducts both quantitative and qualitative research in all the
different Smithsonian museums, from the Air and Space museum to the
Zoo.  Although basic research is included in the program, the
emphasis is on applied research directed to the needs of exhibition
and program planners.  Typical questions are: who are the visitors or
participants, why did they come, what did they do, did they learn
anything, which elements in the exhibition/program were successful
and which were not, what effect did the experience have on
participants, etc.

The opening is for someone who can design studies, manage data,
conduct analysis and first-author reports.  Projects are team
efforts, and the analyst needs to function as team leader, advising
other team members where appropriate.  Since most of the studies are
based on survey data, the individual should be very familiar with
statistical analysis, especially using SAS, and with the design of
survey instruments.

A background in either sociology, educational psychology, or
educational research would be particularly appropriate.  Although a
Ph.D. is not required it is preferred, doctoral candidates will also
be considered.  The position will be formally advertised as an
IS-11/12 with promotion potential to IS-13 with a salary range
between $39,279 and $61,190, depending on experience and skills.
