As such a high proportion of current macro viruses and "worms" seem to be
specific to Microsoft Outlook mail systems one other alternative is to use
another mail system.  I currently handle mail almost entirely in Unix
using the University of Washington's free and widely used "pine" mail
system.

However, where this isn't possible there are some very good non-Microsoft
mail programmes available free of charge for educational and governmental
users (which must between them cover most museums).  I particularly like
Eudora Lite (http://www.eudora.com).

I suppose that in some ways this is giving in to the virus writers, many
of which seem to be attacking Microsoft - or as they would say it the
allegedly poor security standards of some of Microsoft's software,
particularly Outlook and Word.
