                      POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
       PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH COORDINATOR - PUBLIC PROGRAMS
                            FULL TIME


POSITION SUMMARY:  This position reports to the Director of Public
Programs and helps to set and coordinate the goals and strategies
for public programming and community outreach for the California
Academy of Sciences.

The Public Programming aspect of the position will involve the
coordination of multi-department and multi-divisional efforts to
offer person-to-person programs, workshops, tours, lectures,
demonstrations, fairs and other programs to the Academy's public.
In addition, it will require the development and management of
ongoing and new programs to be offered.

The community outreach aspect of the position will involve the
coordination of multi-department and multi-divisional efforts to
provide museum experiences and programs to underserved populations
in the Bay Area.  It will also require the development and
management of ongoing and new outreach efforts.

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
-    Analyzes the current mix of programming and outreach efforts,
     as well as the needs and demographics of the Academy's
     visitors, under-served public, and public with special needs,
     and recommends quantitative and qualitative goals and
     strategies for best serving the needs of those publics through
     a coordinated Academy-wide effort
-    Chairs a committee of Academy staff responsible for providing
     program and outreach services which will coordinate their
     efforts through elimination of redundancy and development of
     new programs and efforts, as necessary and appropriate
-    Manages all aspects of the Herbst Lecture Series and the
     Lilienthal Distinguished Lecture Series
-    Develops and manages other public programs, as appropriate
-    Supports other staff and departments in improving program
     quality and services through evaluation, information
     dissemination and other means
-    Manages Academy Free Days, including staff recruitment and
     coordination of on-floor programs
-    Develops and coordinates special programs related to holidays
     and events important to targeted communities
-    Represents the Academy at meetings and events with community
     groups
-    Attends meetings of the Multi-Cultural Programs Committee of
     the Board of Trustees
-    Attends all Public Programs division meetings, appropriate
     meetings of the Education, Volunteer and Docents,
     Anthropology, and Admissions Departments, and other meetings
     as assigned
-    Evaluates programs as assigned
-    Works with the Public Information Department to publicize
     outreach efforts and public programs
-    Documents the activities, progress, and successes of program
     and outreach efforts
-    Writes grant proposals for funding of community outreach and
     other special programming
-    Follow all Academy safety regulations
-    Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-    Two years experience in community outreach and/or educational
     programming in a museum or other related public institution
-    College degree in museum science, education, community
     affairs, or related field
-    Word processing skills
-    Successful grant writing

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
-    Familiarity with Excellence and Equity, and generally accepted
     standards for a museum's community responsibility
-    Familiarity with learning theories related and applicable to
     informal science education
-    Excellent public speaking and oral and written communication
     skills
