It is my understanding that OnmiPage is the industry leader. Two
years ago I used it to do some OCR on materials from an archive with
mixed results. It worked perfectly when I was converting a high
quality image with clear letters. Unfortunately, the majority of my
documents were frustrating. I had mimeographs with fuzzy letters that
resulted in errors (O, G, C, and Q were substituted, for example).
Photocopies from microfilm were a problem too because they tended to
have extra little black specks and scratches. A spec could be
interpreted as the dot on an i and a scratch could ruin an entire
word. If your manuscript is clean then I certainly recommend buying
Omni, but if not then you may want to save your money.
