More and more states are putting checkoff boxes on
their state and local tax returns to support their
local charities. Most are health and human services
related.

As you are probably aware the US economy is tanking in
many areas. Funding for museums is going to be harder
to come by in the days ahead.

It's probably too late to make a difference for the
2002 returns to be filed later this year, but it seems
to me that a smart museums community in the various
states should lobby their legislators to allow a
checkoff box on their income taxes to provide for an
income tax benefit to be distributed among the area's
museums. Clearly, it couldn't hurt because it would
be an optional tax and nothing that would be directly
affecting all citizens. It might also show how much
or how little museums are supported in your area.

The article below delineates how Colorado is doing
something comparable, but health and human services
related:

Groups urge charity via tax returns ***
Tough fiscal times are pushing people into the same
boat. Ten organizations vying to have Colorado
taxpayers donate a share of their state tax
refunds to their causes are uniting this year to make
their voices heard.
