In reference to your friend's newly acquired historic house, the State
Historical Society of Iowa has a grant program called the Historic Resource
Development Program which is geared primarily towards restoration and
preservation work on historic structures, microfilming archival
collections, and collections care in museums.  Perhaps other states have
similar programs?
