Subject: [MUSEUM-L] dating collection items




When the date of a work, i.e., a Navajo weaving or a contemporary
painting is unknown and cannot be found either by contacting the dealer,
the artist or the artist's estate, what is the proper way to date the
work on its label?  Is there any shame is using the designation "n.d."
to mean "no date" or is it acceptable to guess based on what is known
about the artist?  I did not readily find this information in the book,
The New Museum Registration Methods, perhaps there is another
publication I can review for ways to guide us in dating our unknowns.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
