Attention Interested Museums

Nine 16 Inch naval gun barrels are being disposed of by the Navy at the
Naval Shipyard Long Beach, California. These are the last of replacement
barrels that the Navy have for the largest guns ever used by the U.S..
Since the battleships are now decommissioned and declared obsolete these
barrels are to be surplused and/or scraped. There is a possibility that
some of the barrels may be given to musuems. The greatest problem with
accepting them will be the cost of moving them to any other location.
The Los Angeles Maritime Museum is requesting one and the Military Museum
in San Pedro, CA has a request submitted. Cost of moving one barrel from
the shipyard to the Maritime Museum (3.1 miles) will be approximately
$15,000. If there is another (California?) museum interested in obtaining
one of these barrels, the greatest cost is rental of two 150 ton cranes
to lift the gun barrels onto a massive 13 axle trailer. Each barrel is
68 feet long and weighs 118.5 tons. The barrels were manufactured at the
Washington Navy Yard in 1944 and 1945. Some savings could be realized if
several museums could share some of the cost of transport, two already are.
