The Arnold Arboretumn of Harvard University in Jamaica Plain seeks two
experienced computer professionals for the following opportunities.
 
NETWORK SYSTEMS MANAGER
 
This position calls for an individual with computer experience in an
academic setting to provide oversight for our LAN/WAN.  As the guiding force
behind the development of our specimen-based database/GIS/image management
system, you will provide strategic planning, analysis, and project-related
technology recommendations for a variety of initiatives.  To qualify,
candidates must have an MA, Ph.D., or equivalent, preferably in a computer,
biological, or related collections-based discipline, and a minimum of 5
years' management experience.  We are particularly interested in candidates
experienced in Internet applications and preparing successful grant
applications for technology support.  Hands-on management expertise in the
following areas is essential: MS-DOS, MS-Windows, MacOS, SunOS 4.x, Solaris
2.x, and Novell Netware 3.II.
 
MICROCOMPUTER SYSTEMS SPECIALIST
 
You will provide end-user assistance for approximately 30 DOS and MAC
desktop machines operating in a NetWare 3.II (IPX) and TCP/IP environment.
Primary responsibilities involve responding to day-to-day network
inquiries/requests, Internet connection, configuring applications and
desktop hardware setup; assisting with software/hardware installation; and
user training.  To qualify, candidates must have a BSCS or equivalent and 2+
years' experience with DOS and MacIntosh.  Familiarity with UNIX (TCP/IP)
end user applications and Novell Netware servers required.  The ability to
connect PC's/Mac's to Ethernet networks and configure IP and Appletalk hosts
is essential, as is hands-on experience with the following: WordPerfect,
Microsoft Word, Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, Gopher, WAIS, Mosaic, Advanced
Revelation, and Mac/PC utility programs.
