Although it is now out-of-date in places, for a general introduction, I
think
Edward Alexander's "Museums in Motion" is a good book. It is certainly
very readable and entertaining.

I would also recommend:
Buck and Gilmore, 1998
The New Museum Registration Methods [some parts of this book are very
technical, some are good general introductions to topics]

Pearce, 1993
Museums, Objects, and Collections: A Cultural Study

John Simmons
