I suspect that this list is in danger of losing its impact as well as many of
its readers if some action isn't taken to reduce the length of some of the
postings.

Would it not be possible to do the following?

1. With long articles (such as conference deatils, registration etc) - Post
only a brief summary and an address where further details can be obtained.

2. Avoid attaching the full text of  previous correspondence - Use cut and
paste to select only the relevant points

3. Pay more consideration to keeping posings relevant to the majority of the
readers.
