As the spouse of a collector, I can say that sometimes we have been in
competition with museums in open auctions for the items we collect.
Sometimes we have gotten the object, sometimes not. The objects that we
have at home that are "museum quality" (there are a handful) have been
published in reference books as belonging to us, but so far nobody has come
sniffing for a donation (which we might consider, later, much later). Or
maybe we will approach the appropriate museum later.

I can also say that once we got interested in collecting we definitely
became more active in visiting museums that shed light on what we collected.

I'm still interested in any other opinions from anyone on whether they
believe the collecting market is a source of competition to museums or
generates interest in museum collections.

Thanks

Jason
