This is only slightly off your topic but you may wish to take a look at
Mikita Brottman's amazing article in the recent Chronicle of Higher
Education where she denounces the ADA's supposed interference in
academic life. I wrote a letter in response, which may be published,
and apparently a great many other readers have also contributed their
opinions. Apparently these will be published shortly. The original
article can be found by going to the CHE site and searching under the
title, "Nutty Professors." Keep in mind that while she teaches art
history and art criticism courses at the Maryland Institute College of
Art, she is also a trained therapist--a qualification that for some
reason was not listed with her signature.
As to this specific topic, accessibility is the law. It would be nice
if the ramps or whatever could be artistically integrated into the
building's design, but it is much more important that people be able to
get into and out of the building. Tell us more about the Congress of
New Urbanism and their beliefs and activities in this area. Perhaps
they need some attitude adjustment.
