A lot depends on how old the charcoal sketch is and how long it is going to
be in that frame. Sometimes, if it's a contemporary sketch and it's only
going to be on exhibit a few weeks, you can use plexi in a deep frame, with
plenty of separation between the artwork and the plexi. Or, if you know the
artist, you can get the artist's permission to use a small amount of
fixative on the charcoal and use plexi.

Subject: plexi vs. glass question

Hi--

We are preparing for an exhibition that opens in October. One of the works
is a very large charcoal sketch, and in transit the glass in its frame
broke. We need to replace it, but given its size would much rather do so
with plexi than glass. However, since the sketch is charcoal, we're
concerned about plexi's static charge and potential damage to the piece. Are
there any plexi variants these days that are safe to use with charcoal? Or
am I stuck with getting an alarmingly large pane of glass?

Thanks,

Astrida
