I don't know any where it is a policy (as in the corporate world) but,
yes, I know several at NYU who are being helped by their institutions
and no I'm not going to name them (but I'm not one of them). Working
in a museum may also help you get grants.
 
I do have a feeling, though, that at some museums it is better to
get yourself into the pay track, even at a low salary, than to
volunteer.
