THE ROLE OF MUSEUMS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOLERANCE AND PEACE
May 8 - 13, in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Offered through the Inter-University Centre, Dubrovnik, and the University
of Victoria's Cultural Resource Management Program

A draft session outline is now available for this upcoming course and
symposium. Space is still available -- please contact us if you require
further information or wish to register.

SESSION DESCRIPTION
There is growing recognition in society and across the museum field that
museums are uniquely positioned to build public understanding of the
historic and contemporary factors which shape attitudes and values that
cause or resolve conflict. Understanding this potential and utilizing the
museum's educational and cultural resources to promote tolerance is of
growing importance around the world.
This symposium brings together scholars and students from around the world
to discuss the role and function of museums in promoting tolerance and world
peace, in the memorable setting provided by the Inter-University Centre in
Dubrovnik, Croatia. You develop your ability to:

* recognize a range of social and cultural dynamics which lead to
intolerance and conflict
* identify educational and mediation roles for museums to prevent or
mitigate these dynamics
* understand specific ways in which collections, community
partnerships, research, public programming, and advocacy can be used to
promote peace and tolerance, locally and internationally
* build collaborative relationships with other museum and heritage
professionals and institutions to continue to work toward these objectives

Instructor: Professors Martin Segger of the University of Victoria and Ivo
Maroevic of the University of Zagreb are joined by invited faculty and
