My understanding, based on an announcement at the NIC meeting in
mid-October, is that the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is
now a larger federally funded grant program than NEA or NEH. Headed by the
former director of IMS, the program will keep IMS grants for this upcoming
grant cycle, but there may be changes in the following grant cycle (1998?)
as the merger of museum and library services is worked out. According to
the press release sent to Museum-L in early October, the directorship of
IMLS will change every two years between a museum specialist and a library
specialist.
