SHORT BITES:
· "I find the language of fiction more subtle than what usually gets
written
about artists…in fiction and poetry the meaning is communicated on many
levels, and there is also craft, or style - both form and content, as in
my
work. Form facilitates the ease with which a work of art can be
approached."
(Canadian-based artist Jana Sterbak. "An Absurdist Who Savors the Poetry
of
Technology". The New York Times. 4 Oct 1998)

~~1915-1917 Edmonton Art Assoc. was active. 6 Oct 1921Edmonton Art Club
(EAC) was incorporated. 1922 first public show of EAC at McLeod
Building,
Edmonton. One painting sold. EAC exhibition held annually since 1922.

· Arlene Williams sells wool over the Internet and designs websites for
artists & craftsmen. Her company Quanah for Yarn, named after her cat
who
loves wool, generates about $40,000/yr in revenue. Using an old 486
computer
& Adobe Photoshop software, Ms. Williams creates websites containing
rich
tactile images of fibre. Her clients are "interested in colours &
textures.
They want their sites to be extensions of themselves". (The Globe &
Mail. 1
Oct 1998:C2)

~~It is to the advantage of self-employed artists and cultural workers
to
develop a business plan in the event of an audit in order to demonstrate
the
seriousness of your business. A business plan is simply an overview of
who
you are and what you do, your vision, goals and objectives and how you
plan
to realize them. It describes the past, present and future of your
artistic
venture. It should be approximately 3-4 pages long, written in a clear
and
factual manner. It should demonstrate to Revenue Canada that you are
well
aware of the costs and expenses of running a business, and that you
understand the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities inherent
in
so doing. The bottom line for Revenue Canada is that you anticipate some
profit in the foreseeable future and that your expectation is realistic.

Plan.
