A product called "Bestine" removes any kind of wax or glue.  It can
be found at any graphic arts store.  Here's the caveat:  It's POWERFUL
in bold face caps. It could probably remove paint so use sparingly.
I think a better solution would be to let the aforementioned artwork
rattle and fall onto something no harder than a marshmellow.  Who wants
take a chance with glue/wax/something-gooey-applied-to-artwork in order to
protect it?  That's a big responsibility.  Rigidity does not hold up in
an earthquake.  Just look at the freeways by my house.  Seek the line of
least resistance and go low-tech and flexible with no fear.
