POSITION TITLE:         Senior Content Editor, "Making Sense of Modern Art"

POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Associate Curator of Education/Program Manager
for Interactive Educational Technologies, and in concert with the Senior
Producer, Interactive Educational Technologies, the Senior Content Editor
directs the research, writing, and editorial components for the multimedia
computer program "Making Sense of Modern Art."

"Making Sense of Modern Art" is being developed to provide a straightforward
yet intellectually sophisticated introduction and overview of many of the
issues that have dominated avant-garde art since 1900.  Starting with
artworks in SFMOMA's permanent collection and branching out to include
complementary references from other collections, the program uses a mix of
interactive tools, media, and conceptual frameworks to elucidate key issues
and relationships.

The finished program will be delivered through a series of kiosks in the
Museum's galleries, on disk via CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, and via the Museum's
World Wide Web site. There is the potential for some elements of the program
to be tailored for a PDA for visitor use in the galleries, and for editing
of video elements from the program into a widescreen video presentation
designed for the Museum's Wattis Theater.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

*       In collaboration with the Associate Curator of Education and the
Senior Producer, oversee ongoing delivery of editorial content of the
program.
*       Write thematic overview sections and contextual multimedia essays as
needed.
*       Oversee the work of writer/researchers assigned to draft scripts for
each content grouping and edit these scripts with multimedia outcomes in
mind.
*       Work with team members to monitor progress, overcome obstacles, and
assure intellectual and art historical integrity of content creation
process.
*       Participate in editorial and multimedia design meetings.  Work with
curators and other museum staff as needed.
*       Other editorial duties in the Education Department as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:  Possession of an M.A. in Art History from an
accredited college or university, a strong grounding in 20th-century art and
intellectual/cultural history.
Work Experience:  Proven experience writing about art for a general
audience, preferably in a museum or multimedia context.  Experience creating
educational content for diverse audiences.  Previous copy editing,
proofreading, or publications experience.  Experience working on web sites
and within a museum or other non-profit arts organization desirable.
Skills and Abilities: Ability to meet deadlines.  Strong organizational,
editorial, and proofreading skills.  Experience with an emphasis in
editorial consistency, detail, and accuracy in factual information,
spelling, and grammar.  Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with
writers, designers, and museum staff. Familiarity with Microsoft Word,
Filemaker Pro, multimedia and the World Wide Web. Understanding of
user-centered interactive design.  Commitment to museum education.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to work independently at an off-site location with email access.
Macintosh compatibility is a plus.

Physical Demands:  None specified.
Special Environmental Factors:  Exposure to E.M.F. levels deemed
non-hazardous by state and federal agencies.
