I'm sorry.  I lost the original thread here, but thought I'd throw in
another word for Henry Glassie.  If you can get hold of Glassie's Material
Culture (Bloomington: University of Indiana Press), 1999, he presents a
model for analyzing material culture based on creation, consumption and
communication - the interplay between the creator and consumer.  He looks
at a Turkish rug maker in this book, not to mention several other
non-western creators/consumers of material culture.  He looks at it
largely from an Art History point of view, but I think you may find the
book helpful, regardless.
