Dear Pam,
I believe that I have been mis-understood.  We always first try to place a 
deaccessioned item with another museum or educational institution (if it 
is still useful).  Actually our first choice is to see if our education 
department would like it for the "Museum Use" collection.  And, yes, we 
have sometimes given items to Goodwill (and they have donated to us on 
occasion). The things that we take to the dump are rusty, sharp pieces of 
metal; broken, sharp, pieces of glass and ceramic, insect infested 
mattresses and textiles that are so bug eaten that there is more gone than 
remains.
The dump material is truly not useful to anyone (and hazardous at that) 
but will still be fished out of the dumpster by some people.
We would never offer deaccessioned material to staff or anyone associated 
with the museum.  This goes against our ethics policy and should be the 
policy for any museum.
