In my last semester of college (as a middle-aged
student,) I was an unpaid intern (not quite the same
as a volunteer, I admit, but similar idea) at a State
Historic Site.  At the end of my internship I was
hired.  The position was created for me, solely as a
result of my demonstrated abilities to do research and
perform curatorial duties.
Any chance to "show what you can do" should be
grabbed.
