I think a suggested admission donation is a good first step for a museum
that has previously been free.  We started one (just $1.00) a little over
a year ago and have averaged 46 cents per visitor.  Considering that we
intended our students/faculty/staff, members and children under 12 to be
exceptions to the suggested charge, that's not bad, and certainly better
than the old donation box garnered.
