I am in the middle of reading a really great book. After hearing the
author interviewed on NPR I just had to buy it.

It's a jewel of American social history and material culture, and
would make a worthy addition to any interpretive, curatorial, or
history research library as well as in your museum bookstore.

"Strange Red Cow: and other curious classified ads from the past" by
Sara Bader. ( Clarkson Potter Publishers, New York NY, 2005)  ISBN
1-4-4000-5120-7

This book examines the broad patterns and behaviours of American
society through the evolution of the classified ad - it ranges from
the earliest ad from the 18th century to those on the internet's
Craig's List from last summer. Chapters include: lost and found, the
runaway slave notice, information wanted, personals, help wanted, and
swap.

No matter if you work at a colonial site, federal period, victorian,
industrial, urban, rural, or 20th century museum you will find many
useful morsels here.

I'd love to hear the thoughts of others who are reading this great little book.
