You might consider using ethafoam which is manufactured in various thickness
up to approximately 8" (maybe thicker).  Ethafoam is inert, sturdy and very
malleable.  Simple cut or "scoop" away a depression in the foam or apply a
bit of pressure and the object will rest quite firmly.  If conservation is
not a issue try using hot glue to secure the object.
