The University of Alberta, Department of Museums and Collections Services
invites applications for a temporary full-time Information Management Project
Leader. Reporting to the Collections Registrar, the incumbent will coordinate
the "Regional Partners: Improving Access to Information for Alberta's Museums"
project.

The purpose of the project is to develop and implement a process by which
Alberta museums can evaluate their information management needs and systems,
and determine an appropriate direction to pursue for manual, automated and
eventually, networked systems. The project will promote collaboration among
designated regional partners, standardization of the regional partners'
collections-related information, ensure compatibility among data types, and
improve access, thus increasing the capability to exchange important
information. It will result in the implementation of information management
standards that are adhered to on a regional level by all participating
institutions. Most importantly, it will begin to lay the foundation for a
functional, province-wide museum network--allowing Alberta museums to
electronically connect to one another, and other Canadian and international
institutions and networks.

The incumbent will be responsible for:
-the completion of a manual which will provide an overview of the importance
of information management in museums, as well as general guidelines for the
standardized documentation of human and natural history collections,
-the development of generic information management tools (policies and
procedures, needs assessment process, decision analysis process, etc.),
-participating in the development and delivery of an information management
training curriculum to the staff and volunteers of the designated regional
partners,
-researching and developing a master plan for the electronic networking of
the Alberta museum community, and
-participating in the daily activities of Museums and Collections Services
collections managementt program, as required.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual who holds an
undergraduate degree, with several years of directly related collections
management experience. Training in museum studies would be beneficial. A
high level of proficiency with information management procedures, research
methodology, and diverse and sophisticated technologies (including data
communications) is essential, as are solid communication and project
coordination skills.

This term position offers a maximum of twelve months employment. The
minimum salary is $2254 per month.

Please send your resume to: Personnel Services and Staff Relations,

The closing date for receipt of applications is 16 September 1994.
