If I am interpreting your question correctly (i.e., the use of
commissioned/themed art to raise money for a non-profit such as a museum)
here is an example:

In 2000, the Massachusetts College of Art (MassArt) did this with a cod (as
in fish.)  The mastermind (and funder!) of the project was David Mugar
(i.e., the same David Mugar who named the Mugar OmniTheater at the Boston
Museum of Science.)  The auction raised $230K.
