The Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum
Intern
(a temporary, full-time position)


The Astronomy  Department of the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum,
Chicago, IL, is seeking an intern for the period June 1, 1996, through May
31, 1997.  The Adler Planetarium is a world leader in astronomy education
that serves nearly 700,000 visitors each year.  The facilities include a
438-seat sky theater with a Zeiss Mark VI projector, a SPICE automation
system and video projectors; a 456 seat multimedia theater, three floors of
exhibits, a fully automated observatory, and one of the world's largest
collections of historical scientific instruments.

DUTIES

The position calls for someone with a good basic knowledge of astronomy to:

        1.      Work on gallery interpretation, activities, and public events.
        2.      Assist re-development and implementation of school visit
program.
        3.      Operate planetarium sky shows and observatory.
        4.      Assist with teacher workshops.
        5.      Participate as member of exhibit development team.
        6.      Learn sky show production techniques.
        7.      Assist with answering public inquiries.
        8.      TA for college level astronomy class.
        9.      Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Education:      College degree in science education, astronomy or related
field.
                Be able to demonstrate basic astronomical knowledge.
                Desires a career in the museum or planetarium profession.

Experience:     Preference will be given to candidates with previous
planetarium or astronomy           teaching experience.

HOURS

The Internship is a twelve-month, temporary, full-time position.  Interns
generally work a Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule,
although some evening and weekend work may be required.  There is a stipend
of $1,250 per month.
