Project cost should include: Personnel, overhead costs, and project specific
expenses. How these figures are stated depends on how costs are allocated in
the museum. In some instances, for example, the Executive Director's salary
is counted as all administrative. In other museums ED's have program
responsibilities, etc. ALL appropriate costs should be included in a good
project cost report. The error I have seen most frequently made by small
organizations is to understate true cost by only counting direct cash
expenditures on a project.

Hi, Trevor,

This is the kind of information I generally give them; what they are asking
now is that I put the request in terms of project cost - ie. tell them what
materials we are buying to complete projects rather than telling them it is
going to personnel. I want them to understand that the greatest cost for
most small museums is in paying people, not in the materials.
